Before the advent of chain mail, and as early as 850 A.D., the Vikings used this knitting technique in making armor. Viking Knitting is a perfect technique for making wire-woven bracelets. It involves weaving sterling silver wire around a wooden dowel, and then pulling the weave through a draw plate. Participants in the class will learn the wire working techniques involved in Viking Knitting and complete a bracelet in class. Handouts will be provided. Workshop fee includes materials for bracelet: copper wire, sterling silver wire, end caps, clasp, drawplate, dowel and card stock. Students will need to bring a wire cutter, roundnose pliers, chainnose pliers, small awl or metal knitting needle. For all levels. Sign up on the Sievers School website for Class G2 or call 920-847-2264.

(Excerpted from the Farmgirl Connection™)

We got a chuckle from this “advice” one of our farmgirls came across in her 1949 Singer Sewing Manual:

“Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do. Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on…(If) you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.”

(Thanks to Jeanette Biederman for bringing us a copy of this.)

Since 2001, we have offered scholarships to attend a Sievers class through donations given in part in memory of our quilting teacher Doreen Speckmann and Elisabeth Beinert, a weaving student. Out of this fund we were able to grant five scholarships this year. The recipients and corresponding classes are:

Elisabeth Beinert Scholarship:

Kelly Thompson - Beginning Weaving on a Floor Loom

Doreen Speckmann Scholarships:

Jeannie Shay - Surface Design Techniques:Creative Silk Jacket

Jill Johnson - Color for Knitting

Barb Weller - Bent Willow Chair

Colleen Fouse - Beginning Papermaking

This year, for the first time, we offered a scholarship in the amount of $500 to a graduate of Washington Island School. Primary consideration for this scholarship is the degree to which the applicant is involved in the field of arts (visual, music, theater or dance) and how their involvement has benefited them as well as the Island community. Our first recipient was Lydia Foss. Lydia was a member of the Island singing group, “Faithful Friends” and will be attending Lawrence University.

Partial proceeds from Marianne Fons’ presentation “Why We Quilt” as well as the Sievers Gathering Fiber Arts Garage Sale will benefit the Sievers Scholarship Fund. More information on Sievers Scholarships is shown in the first posting on this news site.

Studio Visits

Time is set aside each Thursday when two classes are in session for a “field trip”. When classes visit each other, they are able to see not only finished pieces, but also the process behind that particular fiber art. Here we have basketmakers paying a visit to the Finnish Knitting and Crochet class:

We are happy to add this news page and share what’s happening at Sievers with you. Look for general news, photos, Sievers Gathering program and registration information, Island events, class updates (perhaps there’s a last minute opening in a previously filled class) and more. We plan to post news at least once each month, but I’m sure you’ll find that we’ve added something new more often than that. We hope you enjoy the Sievers News.

Winter Classes at Sievers

Beginning January 8th and ending February 5th, we held six “Sievers in Winter” classes with a total of 60 students learning quilting, knitting, basketry, sewing, weaving and altered imagery. Island resident teachers Ellen Graf, Kathleen Morris and Judie Yamamoto were joined by Dee Brown, Jeanette Biederman, Rich Prange and Donna Kallner who traveled to the Island, each instructor bringing their talents and enthusiasm helping us start the new year on a creative note.

“Aquafishy”

Tom Grade, papermaking instructor, sent us the Kleenex® box he recently designed for Kimberly- Clark. Entitled “Aquafishy”, it features handmade paper tropical fish “swimming” on an aquarium-blue background. Available across the country, we’ve found it at a nearby Target.

Sievers Scholarships

Each year we offer two scholarships based on artistic merit and financial need to students who wish to attend a Sievers class. The Elisabeth Beinert Scholarship, given in memory of a former student is designated for weaving classes, while the Doreen Speckmann Scholarship, given in memory of a former instructor, applies to all classes. The application deadline for 2008 is April 1st, with notification of award on April 10th. Last year’s recipient attended the weekend Landscape Bead Embroidery class. Contact us by phone, email or through the online registration form for a scholarship application.
