13      Book A Day      (July 5-10)
Class Fee  $400

Daniel Essig
Learn to make 5 different book structures over the course of the week.  The emphasis of the class will be low-tech; you will need few other tools than the basic bookbinding kit.  (Supply list will be sent you prior to class.)  Starting with an overview of various papers, you will learn to tear text blocks and make various folded book structures.  We will cover longstitch, sewn tapes, Coptic, folded and hinged bindings.   Each day we will concentrate on a different binding and material.  You’ll work with handmade paper, leather, mica, papyrus and other elements, learning helpful hints and tricks, as well as techniques and skills that will enhance your future bookmaking.  Although our class projects will be small, you will learn how to adapt some of the structures to become a larger, sturdy journal or sketchbook.  Windows, inlays and closures will also be addressed.  Materials fee of $40 for variety of text blocks, handmade papers, PVA, leather, mica, assorted waxed linen threads, needles, PVA glue, other miscellaneous related materials and use of tools.  For all levels.

15      Beginning Bookmaking With A Textile Twist      (July 8-13)

Ever wonder what to do with those beautiful scraps of fabric too precious to toss?  And/or, even wonder why you don’t have a great little hand-bound notebook?  This brand new class will introduce you to several great bookbinding techniques—and they will incorporate textiles!  Learn to make a tender, soft, wrapped journal with your own felt (Handmade felt will also be available for purchase from the instructor.); stitch a 365-page Coptic book for a personal diary, and stab, dye and glue your way into the wonders of a Japanese hard-bound book!  You’ll learn all the wonders of beginning book making, from folding and tearing your own pages, to transforming your own handmade fabric into book covers.  Materials fee of $60 includes text paper, leather, book board, glues, other miscellaneous related materials, use of bookmaking kit tools, and handouts.  For all levels.

35      Paper Mosaics & The Art Of Paste Painting      (August 17-20)
Class Fee $300

Lorrie Grainger Abdo
This exciting class will definitely put both sides of your artistic brain to use.  First, using a playful intuitive approach, you’ll use paint, paste and a variety of texturing tools to decorate sheets of paper.  The technique gives great first-time results, and with some practice, your sheets will have an amazing depth and detail.  By the time you’re done working “wet” you’ll have a large assortment of paste-painted sheets to use for paper mosaics in class, as well as lots of extras to take home for use in collages, books, journals, greetings cards or as frameable works of art.  That done, we’ll switch sides of the brain and start assembling paper mosaics.  While paper mosaics can be made by carefully placing one piece of paper at a time, in this class you’ll learn the trick of making sheets of paper tiles so that you can work faster and with better control.  Possible projects are picture frames, mirror frames and other home décor items, as well as artistic works on wood supports.  Materials fee of approximately $45 for pigments, paste, paper, laminate film, support boards and related supplies.  For all levels.
