For class hours, go to the Contact & Registration Page For housing information, go to the About The School Page Knitting/Spinning/Dyeing/Felting 5 - Knitting & Crochet From Finland - Class Fee $ 360 Carol Huebscher Rhoades Finnish woolens often feature distinctive colors, motifs and special techniques. During the week we will study the history and practice the techniques for Korsnäs (knitting and crochet in one garment), Rya (yarn shag on the inside), and Rovaniemi mittens (multicolor texture knitting on the front only of circularly knitting). In addition, we’ll explore several old and new color motif traditions. You’ll have a choice of Finnish yarns for the small items (wrist warmers, bags, mittens) that you’ll knit and crochet, and will also learn how to read a simple Finnish knitting pattern. Materials fee of approx. $40-50 for yarns, handouts and patterns. Intermediate to advanced knitting skills needed (familiarity with knitting on double-pointed needles and with 2 colors); beginner crochet skills or beyond. 9 - Beginning Spinning & Rainbow Dyeing - Class Fee $ 360 Deb Jones Spend a week of fun learning the art of handspinning and dyeing! Turn wool and mohair into your own unique yarns! You will learn about fleece selection, washing, handcarding, drumcarding, and spinning single- and multi-ply yarns, turning them into a wonderful rainbow of color! Ashford, Louet and Kromski spinning wheels and related equipment will be available for your use. Materials fee of approx. $55 includes all fibers for spinning and dyeing, dyes and handouts. No experience necessary. 19 - For The Love Of Fair Isle Knitting: Corrugated Ribs, Steeks & Other Techniques Sandy De Master Learn the traditional techniques for constructing a Fair Isle sweater: the “corrugated” ribbing, how to make and cut (yes, cut!) armhole and neck steeks, and various other construction and finishing steps. You will knit a small “teddy bear” sweater of 2-ply fingering-weight Shetland yarn, using circular and double-pointed needles, which will allow you to complete the sweater during class. The class will conclude with the necessary design considerations for making a full-sized sweater or cardigan. Materials fee of $10 for handbook and approx. $10 for ‘Jamieson & Smith’ Shetland yarn to knit your class project. You must know how to knit circularly with double-point needles and have 2-color knitting experience. 36 - Color For Knitting - Class Fee $ 360 Deb Menz Learn a whole range of dyeing techniques for yarns you can use in knitting. To see the many different effects possible, several gauges and types of protein fiber yarns such as merino wool, alpaca and mohair, will be sampled, using Lanaset dyes. We will start with random dyeing techniques such as rainbow dyeing and dip dyeing, then go on to dye painting techniques that can be repeated. Color theory as it applies to yarns for knitting will be included, as well as creating self-striping yarns for socks, scarves and hats. The first three days of class we will focus on all of the dyeing techniques and knitting swatches. Then, you will go on to design yarns for your own project. Materials fee of $50 includes all of the assorted yarns you will use (approx. 1 pound), dyes and chemical assists, use of tools and notebook. For students with beginning level knitting skills; no dyeing experience needed. 41 - Twiggy & Fuzzy: Willow & Felting Combo Class - Class Fee $ 270 Jo Campbell-Amsler & Chad Hagen “Creativity is queen!” in this playful class that combines willow crafting and hand felting. You’ll spend one day working with Jo, as you create Willow People & Nature’s Embellishments. Then, you’ll spend a day with Chad hand felting with colorful wool fleece, to make beads, “snakes” and other wearable items. The third day will be “Combo Day,” with both instructors offering such things as Willow Leaf Dyeing and Cherokee Leaf Printing on muslin and silk scarf blanks, constructing Willow Deer and Cattail Ducks, and making the “You Really Need This Felted Bag,” a small one-piece bag with handle, perfect for use as a purse, eyeglass case, can cozy, etc. Materials fee of $60 ($30 per instructor) includes dyed merino wool fleece, willow, 1 yd of muslin, 8” x 54” silk scarf blank (additional muslin and scarf blanks of various sizes will be available for purchase in Sievers Shop), other related supplies, use of equipment and handouts. For all levels. 43 - “Airy Fairy” Felted Scarves - Class Fee $ 200 Chad Hagen Are they clouds? Pennants for a princess? No, they are the soft, lightweight, yet cozy-warm, “Airy Fairy” Scarves! In class you’ll learn a fast dyeing technique, dye merino wool roving into colorful strips, then interweave and hand felt them to make colorful wearable accessories. The latticework felting technique is one of the most versatile, and you’ll learn several different patterns. You’ll be able to make at least 2 scarves in class and have the skills needed to continue making more at home. Be the envy of everyone you meet! Materials fee of $35 includes merino wool fleece, related supplies, use of equipment and handouts. For all levels. 44 - Felt, Resist, Bead! - Class Fee $ 360 Chad Hagen Here is a class that leans dangerously toward Art. There is nothing more satisfying than to sew beautiful, shiny beads onto rich, matte, hand felted wool, and when that wool is covered with striking resist patterns and colors---well, hang onto your previously felted hats! You’ll begin by learning the basics of felting fine merino wools into flat and 3-dimensional shapes, followed by setting up a dye kitchen that will be easy to replicate once you are back at home. You’ll learn many secrets for resist dyeing, an exciting almost ‘magical’ process, as well as hints on color, design and composition, and make dozens of beautiful felted textile pieces. Finally, you will embellish your feltwork with beads, both with commercially made ones that you bring with you to class and natural, ‘found’ beads from the Island. Materials fee of $40 includes merino wool fleece, Sabraset dyes, related supplies, use of equipment, and handouts. No felting or dyeing experience needed. For all levels. 61 - Knitting Smorgasbord! - Class Fee $ 270 Carol Anderson The pattern booklets from Cottage Creations are varied and manyfrom Wisconsin WinterSocks to the Wonderful Wallaby to the Rambling Rows Jacket28 in all! Here is your opportunity to select from them and knit a project with advice and help from their creator! Bring your own copies or purchase them from the instructor. Bring a work in progress or begin one, two or more new ones in class. Knitting yarns are available for purchase in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own. This class is ideal for any level of knitter (advanced beginners who can cast on, knit, purl, and on up) who wants an enjoyable, relaxed time of sharing stories, knitting tips and simply knitting! 62 - Introduction To Lace Knitting - Class Fee $ 200 Carol Anderson This class presents the opportunity to learn the basics of lace knitting. You’ll have your choice of using 4 straight needles, 2 circular needles, or the 40-inch “magic needle” technique. Using fingering-weight yarn you will complete a Lacey Sachet sampler. Saturday afternoon will be spent in an ‘off campus” location, giving you an opportunity to see more of wonderful Washington Island (the ferry dock? the coffee shop? Schoolhouse Beach? Stave Church? Art & Nature Center?). For intermediate level knitters who can cast on, knit, purl, and on up. 66A - Creative Knitting Retreat - Class Fee $ 360 Sandy De Master & Mary Germain Spend a week tapping into your creativity, as you design a knit garment of your choosingsweater, socks, mittens, or ???? Select one of many paths to create a unique piece: use a knitting pattern from a magazine or book as your starting point and add or subtract to customize it; use a totally different yarn than the pattern calls for and we’ll help you work out the required numbers, based on your gauge (maybe handspun?); or combine features from several patterns together into one garment. Don’t be overwhelmed thoughyou don’t have to create an original design. This class is also open to knitters who want to solve current knitting problems. Bring your questions and/or current project. Needles, yarn and patterns will be available for purchase, or bring your own. For knitters with basic skills (cast-on, knit, purl, increase/decrease, bind off, etc.) and some experience reading and knitting from a pattern. 66B - Creative Knitting Retreat - Class Fee $ 270 Sandy De Master & Mary Germain This class presents a shorter, 3-Day version of the Creative Knitting Retreat.
