For class hours, go to the Contact & Registration Page Knitting/Spinning/Dyeing/Felting 34 - Design Traditional Knit Mittens (August 15-20) - Class Fee $ 380 Carol Huebscher Rhoades Mitten knitting is a wonderful way to explore traditional patterns and learn new knitting skills. Working with sport-weight wool yarns, we’ll start by sampling various cuff and thumb gusset styles. You’ll then learn how to calculate stitch counts for mittens that fit and how to combine cuff, hand and thumb shaping for an overall pleasing look. After learning the basics of mitten construction, we’ll explore star, rose, sun and other typical motifs from Scandinavia and the Baltics, so you can design and knit your own traditional- style mittens. Other techniques that will be presented and practiced include: several cast-on methods, doubled, lace and entrelac cuffs, two-end and Baltic braids for embellishment, and two-color stranded knitting. Materials fee of approx. $10 for handout packet of patterns and charts. Bring your own yarns and needles or purchase them in the Sievers Shop. For intermediate knitters who know how to cast-on/bind-off, knit/purl, make basic increases/decreases, and knit in the round. 41 - Beyond Beginning: Spinning (August 29-Sept.3) - Class Fee $ 380 Deb Jones This class will challenge spinners to move out of their comfort zone and learn new techniques for fiber preparation, spinning and plying.
