Carol Riedner - Art to wear! Nuno felting is a method in which wool fiber is felted through a woven fabric, producing a light-weight felt. Make yourself a gorgeous ruffled scarf using this technique. You'll use soft, merino wool roving and a variety of silk print fabrics to fashion a lovely accessory, using a shortcut, hybrid method of nuno felting. The roving holds the overlapped silk fabric together, as you combine the techniques of dry needle felting with wet felting to make the finished scarf. It's fun and easy to do! Materials fee of $20 for several colors of merino roving and handouts. Bring your own thrift store silk to use (Help the planet by recycling.), or purchase from Carol's collection. No previous experience is needed. For all levels.
Chad Hagen - Everyone needs a new scarf just about every year, and so this class is made to order. Join us and make four stunning handfelted scarves during our fun-filled week. You'll learn three different dyeing techniques: dry powder, immersion and resist dyeing, to hand-dye each one of your merino wool scarves. New and old scarf designs will be covered, including the "Lazy Daisy" variation on Chad's "Airy Fairy Scarf" which is a light scarf made with a lattice of roving strips, a fabulous "Nip & Stretch" shoulder wrap, the "Carolina Stitched Petal Scarf" and more. Materials fee of $65 includes all wool fibers used, dyes and chemicals, related supplies, use of equipment and handouts. No experience needed, but expect some time standing. For all levels.
Chad Hagen - Finally, a class for those who like to make small, useful objects with hand felting! These items will be great as gifts or to share during a 'playdate.' We'll make a variety of them: beautiful coasters, several types of felted beads, and will add a few felted snakes to the mix to make headbands. How about a small, solid, Euro Bear to swing from your rearview mirror? Be ready to be surprised by our projects, have a great deal of fun AND take home a treasure bag of cool, felted objects! Materials fee of $35 includes all wool fibers used, related supplies, use of equipment and handouts. No experience needed, but expect some time standing. For all levels.
Deb Jones - Spend a week of fun learning the art of handspinning and dyeing! Turn wool and mohair into your own unique yarns! You will learn about fleece selection, washing, handcarding, drumcarding, and spinning single- and multi-ply yarns, turning them into a wonderful rainbow of color. Ashford, Louet, Schacht and Kromski spinning wheels and related equipment will be available for your use. Materials fee of $60 includes all fibers for spinning and dyeing, dyes and handouts. No experience necessary.
Sandy De Master & Mary Germain - Lined mittens are the ultimate cold weather protection for hands. Sandy and Mary refer to these as "Mittens a la Irma," since they were the signature of their Latvian friend Irma Mezaraups Ciganovich who grew up in Zemgale, the coldest region of Latvia. Learn all of the techniques involved in knitting a beautiful pair of multi-colored, lined mittens by making an ornament-size mitten (approx. 2 " x 4 ") during the class. Included will be a presentation of the ancient symbols used as design elements in Latvian textiles, special tips for making and attaching the lining, working on a hem with a picot edge, inserting the slightly pointed thumb, as well as shaping it and the mitten top. Once you've completed your little mitten, you'll be ready to begin your own full-size pair of mittens---with assistance from Sandy and Mary. The sport- and fingering-weight yarns and needles needed will be available for purchase, or you may bring your own (A supply list will be sent to you prior to class). $15 notebook fee. Open to those who how to knit circularly with double-pointed needs and have two-color knitting experience.
Heather Winslow - Imagine enjoying the beauty, spontaneity and satisfaction of being able to weave fabric in which colors are not confined to warp and/or weft stripes. You can do this by painting your own warp. You will have full use of a dye studio, with plenty of space to stretch out your protein fiber warp (wool or silk), enough for two scarves, and "paint" it with acid dyes in whatever colors appeal to you. If you like, bring a favorite picture or natural object to help you determine your colorway. You may also choose to paint coordinating yarn for your weft. Yarns may be purchased from the instructor by prior arrangement, in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own from home. Expect to spend $30-75 for yarns, depending on your choice of fibers, and whether you paint yarn for both warp and weft, plus $25 materials fee for dyes, chemicals and notebook. (This class is also offered as a 5-Day class with weaving time--see Weaving page, Class No. 30B) No dyeing experience needed. For all levels.
Carol Anderson - Over the years Carol has learned and used a wide number of knitting techniques and skills, and she thoroughly enjoys sharing them with her students. This 3-Day class will introduce a new project each day. Day 1: the "Wingspan" Shawl, an asymmetric shawl featuring short-row knitting; Day 2: a miniature version (so that you'll be able to do all the steps in making it) of Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Suspender Sweater"; and Day 3: a lace scarf. You will not be able to finish most of the projects in the allotted time, but will get a good start here and information for completing them at home. Come and learn more and/or refine your skills in a low-key, enjoyable atmosphere. Knitting yarns and needles will be available for purchase in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own. Handout fee of $5. For knitters with basic skills (must know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease and bind off) and who are comfortable using double-point and circular needles.
Carol Anderson - Allow yourself the time to knit, rain or shine, while also having an opportunity to see more of wonderful Washington Island. The Saturday locations on the Island will be a surprise (the ferry dock? the coffee shop? Schoolhouse Beach? Trinity Lutheran Stave Church?), winding up at the end of the day back at Sievers with three hours of studio instruction. Your 'out and about' project will be of your choice (You'll want to make it simple and portable.). Friday and Saturday afternoon studio time will be spent on Carol's "25 Tricks of the Trade," a compilation of knitting hints and shortcuts she's gathered over the years. Bring your own yarn and needles for the technique and sample knitting, and for your personal project, or purchase them from the Sievers Shop. Handout fee of $3. This class is ideal for any level of knitter (advanced beginners who can cast on, knit, purl, and on up) who wants an enjoyable, relaxed weekend of sharing stories, knitting tips and simply knitting!
Donna Kallner - Explore natural dyeing and eco-printing on fabrics and yarns, using plant materials commonly found in the Upper Midwest. Working with fresh, frozen and dried blossoms, leaves, twigs, and barks, you'll sample hot and cold bundle dyeing and color extraction for immersion dyeing. Eco-friendly mordants and modifiers will help produce a range of colors. Class includes information on wild-harvesting and growing (even in limited space) for a sustainable supply of natural dye material. Materials fee of $35 includes dyestuffs to supplement what we gather, fabric and yarns for sampling, metals, mordants, modifiers and reference information. For all levels.
No Instructor - The Walter Studio will be yours---from 2:00 Monday afternoon until 11:00 Thursday morning--for uninterrupted time to design, knit, block and finish, or experiment with techniques there never seems time to do, in the company of other knitters. We provide the studio, with plenty of space for pinning and blocking, and equipment such as umbrella swifts and ball winders; you provide your yarn, needles and related supplies, or purchase them in the Sievers Shop. Bring your own patterns, purchase them from the Shop, or borrow books from the Sievers Library.
Deb Jones - Come, 'run away' to the Island and spin, spin, spin!! This class is designed to allow you to work at your own skill level on projects of your choice, with assistance, advice and encouragement from the instructor. Projects may include spinning for a specific project, experimenting with new fibers, exploring novelty yarns, dyeing, or just pulling fibers out of your stash. Bring your own wheel and related equipment, or use ours. Deb will bring her usual "shop" of fibers, such as wool, alpaca, silk, angora, ramie, linen, cotton, tencel, etc. for purchase (approx. $50-75, depending on your choices), or you may bring your own. Some beginning spinning experience is necessary, but you don't need to be an expert..."early career" spinners are welcome!
Carol Huebscher Rhoades - Scandinavian mittens, with their distinctive star, animal and floral motifs, are not hard to knit, but one size doesn't fit all. In this class you'll learn how to calculate stitch counts for mittens that fit, and how to combine cuff, hand, thumb and top shaping for an overall pleasing look. Carol will provide basic pattern templates so you can choose the motifs that will work best for your mitten dimensions. You'll learn a variety of cast-on methods, braids and fringe for embellishment, and explore several cuff styles (ribbed, doubled, entrelac) for your two-color patterned mittens. The autumn air on Washington Island will enhance your experience of knitting Scandinavian-style mittens to fit your hand and your style. Bring your own sport-weight wool yarn and needles, or purchase them in the Sievers Shop. (A supply list will be sent to you prior to class) Materials fee of approx. $10 for handouts of patterns and charts. For knitters of intermediate level and beyond who know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit in the round and have two-color knitting experience.
Sandy De Master & Mary Germain - Spend a week tapping into your creativity, as you design a knit garment of your choosing--sweater, socks, mittens, or ???? Select one of many paths to create a unique piece: use a knitting pattern from a magazine or book as your starting point and add or subtract to customize it; use a totally different yarn than the pattern calls for and we'll help you work out the required numbers, based on your gauge (maybe handspun?); or, combine features from several patterns together into one garment. Don't be overwhelmed, though--you don't have to create an original design. This class is also open to knitters who want to solve current knitting problems. Bring your questions and/or current project. Needles, yarn and patterns will be available for purchase, or bring your own. For knitters with basic skills (cast-on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, bind off, etc.) and some experience reading and knitting from a pattern. |
