Knitting/Spinning/Dyeing/Felting

14      Felted Scarves      (July 6-8)
Class Fee $220

Chad Hagen      It’s ART for your neck!  Join us for a busy weekend where you will learn the techniques to dye your own wool and make two stunning, handfelted scarves.  Beginning with a needle-punch batt of merino wool, you’ll felt a full-size scarf; then use an ancient Japanese stitching method to create the Mokume Bark Scarf.  Next, you’ll dye your stitched scarf, using low-immersion dry powder dyeing methods and finally, you will learn to overdye your scarf in fabulous color with a resist technique, for an incredibly beautiful, one-of-a-kind result!  Your second, the Airy Fairy Scarf, is a lighter scarf, made with a lattice of wool roving strips that are then hand felted.  Setting up a safe dye kitchen will be covered.  Materials fee of $35 includes merino wool roving and needle-punch batts, dyes and chemicals, thread and needles, related supplies, use of equipment and handouts.  No experience needed, but expect some time standing.

20      A Handspun Sampler      (July 20-22)
Class Fee $220

Deb Jones
Join handspinning friends for a weekend of exploration!  Learn the qualities, preparation and spinning techniques, finishing, and uses of a variety of fibers.  We will work with alpaca, silk, angora, ramie, linen, cotton, tencel….and others.  This is the perfect class for those wanting to expand their range of spinning skills and knowledge!  Spinning wheels and related equipment will be available for your use, or bring your own wheel.  Materials fee of approx. $50 includes a generous supply of beautiful fibers and handouts.  For advanced beginner/intermediate spinners who are comfortable spinning wool.

37      Spinners’ Retreat      (August 20-24)
Class Fee $360

Deb Jones
Come, ‘run away’ to the Island and spin, spin, spin!!  This class is designed to allow you to work at your own skill level on projects of your choice, with assistance, advice and encouragement from the instructor.  Projects may include spinning for a specific project, experimenting with new fibers, exploring novelty yarns, dyeing, or just pulling fibers out of your stash.  Bring your own wheel and related equipment, or use ours.  Deb will bring her usual “shop” of fibers, such as wool, alpaca, silk, angora, ramie, linen, cotton, tencel, etc. for purchase (approx. $40-60, depending on your choices), or you may bring your own.  Some beginning spinning experience is necessary, but you don't need to be an expert..."early career” spinners are welcome!

39      Knitting On Location      (August 24-26)
Class Fee $220

Carol Anderson      Allow yourself the time to knit, rain or shine, while also having an opportunity to see more of wonderful Washington Island.  Your class project will be your choice, with Carol’s own Cottage Creations pattern books as our springboard.  The Saturday locations on the Island will be a surprise (the ferry dock?  the coffee shop?  Schoolhouse Beach?  Trinity Lutheran Stave Church?), winding up at the end of the day back at Sievers with three hours of studio instruction.  This class is ideal for any level of knitter (advanced beginners who can cast on, knit, purl, and on up) who wants an enjoyable, relaxed weekend of sharing stories, knitting tips and simply knitting!

40      Knitting Potpourri II      (August 26-29)
Class Fee $300

Carol Anderson      Over the years Carol has learned and used a wide number of knitting techniques and skills, and she thoroughly enjoys sharing them with her students.  This 3-Day class will introduce a new project each day.  Day 1:  Introduction to Lace knitting, with a lace sachet project; Day 2:  Sock knitting and incorporating a new heel; and Day 3:  Knitting a two-color Scandinavian design cap, using a “chart-less” technique.  Come and learn more and/or refine your skills in a low-key, enjoyable atmosphere.  Knitting yarns and needles will be available for purchase in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own.  Handout fee of $5.  For knitters with basic skills (must know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease and bind off) and who are comfortable using double-point and circular needles.

47A      Creative Knitting Retreat      (September 18-23)
Class Fee $400

Sandy De Master & Mary Germain
Spend a week tapping into your creativity, as you design a knit garment of your choosing—sweater, socks, mittens, or ????  Select one of many paths to create a unique piece:  use a knitting pattern from a magazine or book as your starting point and add or subtract to customize it; use a totally different yarn than the pattern calls for and we’ll help you work out the required numbers, based on your gauge (maybe handspun?); or, combine features from several patterns together into one garment.  Don’t be overwhelmed, though—you don’t have to create an original design.  This class is also open to knitters who want to solve current knitting problems.  Bring your questions and/or current project.  Needles, yarn and patterns will be available for purchase, or bring your own.  For knitters with basic skills (cast-on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, bind off, etc.) and some experience reading and knitting from a pattern.

47B      Creative Knitting Retreat: Shortened      (September 20-23)
Class Fee $300

Sandy De Master & Mary Germain      This class offers a 3-Day version of the Creative Knitting Retreat.  See Class No. 47A for description.

56      Design & Knit A Norwegian Sweater      (October 14-19)
Class Fee $400

Carol Huebscher Rhoades
Norway has a rich knitting tradition, including the Setesdal sweaters that now symbolize the country.  We'll spend the week exploring Norway's regional patterns, sweater styling and yarns.  Each student will design and knit a small sweater which will serve as a template for a full-size garment.  Techniques to be covered include: choosing motifs and balancing them in an overall pattern, two-color stranded knitting, knitting in the round, purling with yarn held in back, one-stitch "steeks," and cutting a neckline.  You'll also learn how to finish your sweater with knitted facings, woven braids and clasps (Available for purchase from instructor).  Throughout the week we'll discuss the history of Norwegian sweaters, as well as knitting myths and traditions.  For those interested in Norwegian sheep and wool, we can have an evening discussion and spinning practice.  Materials fee of approx. $10 for handouts and patterns. Bring your own yarns and needles, or purchase them in the Sievers Shop. For knitters of intermediate level and beyond who know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit in the round and have two-color knitting experience.
