Quilting
4 Quilting: Symmetry
In Design (June 3-8)
Class
Fee $400
Ellen Graf Are you looking for
your next step in creative quilting, but not sure
how to approach it? This
years’ design class will focus on the principle of symmetry, exploring
its different types, and how to use them in your quilts. Each morning
a short presentation, followed by user-friendly exercises,
will help you understand a particular facet of the
concept. After
the morning session, studio time will be yours to spend
on an independent quilt project or projects of your
choice, with Ellen on hand to provide advice or assistance. Feel
free to bring your quilting projects, whether machine
or hand done, at whatever point in the process they
are, so that you can take them to the next step towards
completion. You
will leave the class with a new-found knowledge or
better understanding of what makes a quilt design work. (Sewing
machine in good working condition required if you
are doing your project by machine.) $5 materials fee for morning
exercise supplies and handouts. For all levels of quilters.
5 Open
Quilt Studio (June 9-14)

No Instructor The quilter’s
dream—one uninterrupted week devoted to designing and piecing
a
major project, or experimenting with techniques there
never seems time to do. The studio space is yours—to put
up designs, sew, lay out quilts for pinning, hand quilt, etc., in the
company of other quilters. We provide the studio, pin-up boards,
tables for sewing and cutting; you provide your sewing
machine, needed equipment and supplies.

18 My
Latest, Greatest Quilt (July 15-20)
Class
Fee $400
Marianne Fons & Ellen Graf Are
you a quilter with a pile of UFOs (unfinished objects)? Have you
ever laid aside a stack of blocks because you couldn’t think of
the perfect setting? Have you abandoned an almost-completed top
because you couldn’t decide on a border? This weeklong class
hooks you up with veteran quilters Marianne Fons and
Ellen Graf, creating friendly, extra brainpower to devise happy solutions
to un-block and move those quilt projects to completion. Monday
morning starts with a look at an individual project from each student,
with observations and suggestions from Marianne and Ellen. The
rest of the week is devoted to individual sewing, with both instructors ‘at
the ready’ for
assistance and collaboration. Whether you bring one project or
several, whether you work by hand or by machine, you’ll head for
the ferry dock at the end of the week knowing your
quilt is squarely on its way to be the great quilt it was meant to be! (Sewing
machine required if you are doing your project by machine.) For
all levels of quilters.
26 Beginning
Quilter “Boot Camp” (July
29 – August 3)
Class
Fee $400
Mary Fons Do you want to make a
quilt? One that will warm hearts and bodies for a long, long time? You
can do it! This class is your jump-off point. Instructor
Mary Fons (co-host of the PBS show, “Love of Quilting” and
creator/host of “Quilty”) will begin at the beginning: fabric
basics, color theory, design choices, rotary cutting
basics, sewing a perfect quarter-inch seam, pressing, patchwork tips
and more. Next,
you’ll start making blocks for a quilt top. If you know zip
(or next to zip) about quilts or patchwork but you
know you’ve
got a quilt in you, this is your time. There are no stupid questions—and
there is a LOT of fun to be had. You’ll leave class with
a quilt top either done or nearly done! Sewing machine in good
working order required. $40 materials fee for “starter” fabric

36 Quilting: “Mission
Possible” (August 19-24)
Class
Fee $400
Judy Hasheider Your mission, should you
decide to accept it, will be to design and create your own quilt, using an
assigned block. We’ll cover such concepts as: drafting a
design using your block, determining which size to make it, choosing fabrics,
introducing other blocks, changing blocks slightly, selecting the project size
(from table runner or wall hanging to larger quilt), and laying out the components. Using
five or six different quilt blocks, Judy will begin by dividing the class into
groups of three or four students, each of whom will receive the same block. This
will provide the opportunity to see several interpretations of a similar theme. (Supply
list will be sent to you prior to class.) Sewing machine in good working
order required. For intermediates and beyond.
