For class hours, go to the Contact & Registration Page For housing information, go to the About The School Page Quilting 13 - English Medallion Quilt With Mariner’s Compass - Class Fee $ 360 Bettina Havig The classic style of the English medallion quilt influenced American quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuriesand throughout the development of quiltmaking. In this class we’ll incorporate it with a classic block, the Mariner’s Compass, and take a quantum leap into the 21st century, as we construct the quilt using the time-saving tools and equipment of today. After an historic glimpse and overview, you’ll first learn to draft the compass design and then create your own Mariner’s Compass. It will form the centerpiece of a sequence of borders that will complete your quilt. We will cover the ins and outs of planning and sizing the borders to frame each round of the quilt and will focus on the border styles most often seen on early medallion quilts. This is an elegant style that incorporates large-scale prints and dynamic stripe fabrics and is a good introduction to quick-pieced border options. A complete fabric/supply list will be sent to you prior to class. Sewing machine required. For intermediate to advanced quilters. 30 - Machine Quilting Techniques - Class Fee $ 200 Marla Yeager Take a weekend to learn the latest machine quilting techniques. We will cover everything from the beginning level to the most advanced. You will learn about needles, threads, battings and other supplies necessary to create your quilting project. A fabric/supply list will be sent to you prior to class. This hands-on class requires a strong knowledge of your recently cleaned and serviced sewing machine, with a free-arm extension bed or plastic surround table. For all skill levels, it is very beneficial when taken in conjunction with the “Quilt Design” class. 33 - Quilt Design - Class Fee $ 360 Marla Yeager The quilter’s dreamone uninterrupted week devoted to designing and piecing a major project, or experimenting with techniques there never seems time to do. Learn to create and enhance your project, using color and texture in new and different ways. This class is an independent study, so you will be able to focus on what you like, and work at your own pace. Sewing machine required. For intermediate to advanced quilters. 40 - Creating Your Own Landscape Quilt - Class Fee $ 270 Natalie Sewell Learn to create a unique landscape that reflects your own artistic definition of a favorite scene. This class requires no measuring, templates or patterns. Starting with a favorite photo as a “jumping off” point, you will learn how to use fabric and scissors as your canvas and paintbrush. The class will emphasize design techniques, but will also include tips for choosing borders and finishing your landscape quilt. Plan to have fun and learn how to let yourself go artistically. A fabric/supply list will be sent to you prior to class. Sewing machine required. For intermediate quilters. 47 - The Quilt Top Is Finished...Now What? - Class Fee $ 200 Ellen Graf As a quiltmaker with a newly completed quilt top, have you ever asked yourself, how should I finish this? What quilt design should I use and how will I mark it? What thread is best, and what color should I use? And, how do I start? This class is formatted to address both practical and design considerations in taking you and your quilt to the next step. You will bring a completed top with you to class and we will work together to help you determine a quilt design for it, mark the design and begin quilting it. Whether you hand or machine quilt, you will find the information presented valuable in all of your projects. If you wish to machine quilt, a sewing machine in good working order with walking foot is required. A supply list will be sent to you prior to class. For all levels. 49 - Serendipity Quilts - Class Fee $ 360 Judy Hasheider Serendipity can be defined as an accidental fortunate discovery; in other words…a “happy mistake.” In this class we will focus on the 60-degree patterns of Sara Nephew for quiltmaking. Beginning with a focal fabric, the featured patterns will be achieved by stacking six layers of the fabric and randomly cutting them into triangles and diamonds, forming beautiful kaleidoscopes. The design process won’t stop hereyou will continue by adding more pieces to create even more complex-looking patterns. Although these quilts look intricate, in reality they are a “baby step” away from piecing squares and rectangles. Sara’s book “Serendipity Quilts” or “Doubledipity: More Serendipity Quilts” is required and may be ordered from the instructor prior to class. Join in on this “serendipitous” experience! Materials information will be sent to you prior to class. Sewing machine required. For intermediate to advanced quilters. 54 - Curved Seam Piecing Techniques - Class Fee $ 270 Jeanne Pfister Traditionally, quiltwork consists of straight seam piecing. However, as quilting has gradually moved from traditional to art, so has piecework. Come and ‘stretch’ your own quiltmaking, and ‘play’ with 3 different curved seam piecing techniques. Jeanne will introduce you to ‘skinny seams’; using freezer paper; and free-form curves. Elements of design, line and color considerations will also come into play as you work on daily sample projects. A fabric/supply list will be sent to you prior to class. $3 fee for paper and handouts. Sewing machine with extended table in good working order required. For all levels of quilters with general knowledge of quilt construction (some free-motion sewing experience will be helpful).
