Beading/Stitchery/Wearables

7      Adult/Child Class:  Beginning Sewing - Apron      (June 15-17)
Class Fee $220/120

Sylvie Nguyen
Sewing is a skill that will be useful for years to come.  Come with a partner for a class that will introduce you to the basics!  You will learn how to read a pattern, lay out and cut fabric, and each sew an apron.  Sylvie will offer suggestions for pattern choices, as well as fabric types, in a pre-class mailing.  Sewing machine in good working order required.  Pairs may share a machine, although it will work better if each has their own.  A limited number of sewing machines are available to rent from Sievers for class use.  Participants should practice sewing along straight edges and lines prior to class.  For all levels.

11A      A Wearable Extravaganza      (June 24-29)
Class Fee $400

Daryl Lancaster Wrap your body in clothing from your own hands.  This is a terrific class for those wanting to learn to fit and sew clothing from their own handwoven, hand printed, dyed, quilted, felted, commercial or other special fabrics, as well as those more experienced students wanting more polished and professional results in their garment making.  You will construct a basic unlined jacket with pre-washed fabric you bring to class and custom-fit to yourself, while learning all sorts of inspiring techniques to make your clothing reflect your creativity.  You can expect to gain confidence in your garment construction skills, no matter what level, and will learn to work with your chosen fabric.  Daryl’s goal is to have participants look at sewing as a creative process.  Skills will be taught using samples, handouts, storyboards, Power-Point presentations and demonstrations.  A supply list will be sent to you prior to class.  Materials fee of $35 includes twill tape, interfacing, shoulder pads, pattern paper and extensive bound notebook.  (Repeating students who have already made the jacket may opt to make a pieced vest or bring their own pattern/s.)  Sewing machine in good working order and some minimal basic sewing skills required.  A limited number of sewing machines are available to rent for class use.  For all levels.

11B      A Wearable Extravaganza:  Extended      (June 24 – July 1)
Class Fee $520

Daryl Lancaster      This class offers more time to design and sew, in a 7-Day version of Daryl’s weeklong (5-day) class.  A bonus Pieced Tote Bag project will be added, a great way to turn fabric scraps and leftovers into something wonderful…and useful!  See Class No. 11A for basic class description.

19      Patchwork Peyote Beaded Necklace      (July 20-22)
Class Fee $220

Lynn Schuster      Create a beautiful quilt-like, 3-dimensional pendant, as you learn the basic beadwork techniques of flat peyote and brick stitch.  Using a variety of size 11 and size 8 seed beads, plus an assortment of accent beads, you will create a number of rectangles and squares.  When stitched, folded and manipulated into pleasing shapes, these will be combined to fashion a beautiful and fun, one-of-a-kind pendant.  To finish, some of the same accent beads will be strung to make the neckpiece, resulting in a stunning necklace you’ll surely cherish for years to come.  Materials fee of $30 includes your beads, thread, needles, work mat and instructional notebook.  Designed for beginners, but open to all.

28      Buttons, Simply Buttons!      (August 3-5)
Class Fee $220

Diane Fitzgerald
Dig out your stash of old buttons and put them to good (and new) use!  Augment them with bags of plastic buttons from your favorite fabric store, to add color.  In this class you can give free rein to your creative instincts while we use buttons as elements in design.  Thread, wire, cord, ribbon, chain, paper, etc., can be used as the connecting material, using bead stitches, embroidery or knotting, along with beads, charms or other components.  Think jewelry, fabric embellishment, or get whimsical and make button dolls.  Let your imagination take over!  Lots of samples will be available to get you started.  See Diane’s web site for photos and more information:  www.dianefitzgerald.com  Bead supplies will be available for purchase from instructor in class, or bring your own (a supply list will be sent prior to class).  For all levels.

29      Sculptural Brick Stitch      (August 5-10)
Class Fee $400

Diane Fitzgerald      Explore the possibilities of line, shape and texture with brick stitch, using a variety of beads to make a collar, bracelet, decorative item such as a vessel, or even a wall piece.  We’ll begin by making components using a limited color palette, then arrange and connect them.  Brick stitch elements could also be applied to fabric, such as an embellishment for a shirt, vest or purse.  This stitch is extremely versatile for beading around items, such as buttons, rings, cabochons or other perforated objects, and may also be used to create 3-dimensional pieces.  (See Diane’s web site for photo examples:  www.dianefitzgerald.com)  Bead supplies will be available for purchase from instructor in class, or bring your own (a supply list will be sent prior to class).  For intermediate to advanced level beaders.

38      Viking Knit Silver Wire Jewelry      (August 24-26)
Class Fee $220

Barbara Heike
Seriously?  Knitting a bracelet without yarn or knitting needles?  Seriously!  Join us for this creative wire-working class, and learn the ancient technique of Viking Knitting.  Before the advent of chain mail, and as early as 850 A.D., the Vikings used this “knitting” technique in making armor.  It involves looping a .999 fine silver wire around a wooden dowel, then pulling the woven wire through a drawing plate, forming a beautiful Viking Knit bracelet.  After mastering the single-knit technique, you’ll learn the art of double knitting.  While single-knit bracelets are open and lacy, double-knit bracelets are more dense and the wire more compact, resulting in a beautiful, intricate weave.  Time allowing, you may opt to make a pair of earrings to match.  Materials fee of $95 includes 22- and 24-gauge silver wire, 24-gauge copper wire, end caps, clasps, use of specialized tools and handouts.  For all levels.

43      Mixed Metals Jewelry      (September 3-6)
Class Fee $300

Mary Hettmansperger
Explore jewelry design, using a variety of techniques and materials.  In this fast-paced class you will learn and use a wide number of basketry skills such as plaiting, looping, coiling, knotting, sumac and twining.  We will also cover torch fire enameling, low-tech metal work, cold connections, as well as ways to combine the many media.  Kit fee of $50 includes the base materials for all of your projects (copper sheeting, wires, waxed linen), tool usage and handouts.  You are also encouraged to bring your own small rocks, natural barks, pods, sticks, hardware, and other found natural or metal items to incorporate into your designs.  There is no end to the inspiring options!  For all levels.

46      Multi-Media Scarf For Weavers & Non-Weavers      (Sept. 14-17)
Class Fee $300

Anita Luvera Mayer
This is a class for all!  Each student will create a scarf, featuring Rya knots tied into woven fabric that you will make in the studio.  Weavers will work on floor looms to weave their base scarf, while non-weavers will be introduced to weaving on a simple stretcher frame for theirs.  Design and color will be an integral part of the class, as you explore discharging color, stamping with fabric paints, and using vinegar to transfer rust to the fabric that will be made into strips for the Rya knots.  You’ll weave your scarf, then tie in the fabric strips to add texture and interest.  Anita will bring examples, as well as discuss the wide range of ways to use this technique for clothing and accessories.  Materials fee of $40 includes all supplies and materials used in class.  Weavers may either purchase their warp and weft yarns, or bring them from home.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  For all levels.
