For class hours, go to the Contact & Registration Page Weaving 1 - Weaving Turned Drafts (May 16-21) - Class Fee $380 Judith T. Yamamoto In weaving literature we find frequent references to “turned drafts.” In this class we will explore the idea of turning a weaving draft: why, when and how it is done. After playing with some samples on paper (or with a computer) each student will choose a structure, design a pattern and weave a project using a turned draft. You’ll be encouraged to weave some extra fabric along with your project, for a sample exchange with the other students in the class. Yarns will be available for purchase in Sievers Shop, or bring your own. Expect to spend $35-60, depending on your yarn choice/s, plus $10 notebook fee. 4- and 8-harness looms and weaving accessories provided. You must know how to warp and weave on a 4- or 8-harness floor loom and have a basic understanding of weaving drafts. For intermediate to advanced-level weavers. 3 - Beginning Weaving On A Table Loom (June 4-6) - Class Fee $ 210 Nancy Frantz No previous weaving experience necessary! Here is your chance to enjoy the fun and creativity of weaving in a weekend’s time. You’ll learn to prepare a warp and dress it onto the loom; then weave. Once you’ve learned the basics of weaving, they may be easily transferred to floor loom weaving. Expect to spend $15-25 for yarns, plus materials fee of $5 for handouts. Looms and weaving accessories provided. This class is designed for people with no weaving experience, but may also be used as a refresher. 5 - Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Floor Loom (June 6-11) - Class Fee $ 380 Lynn Stracka Schuster Are you intrigued by the beauty of handwoven cloth? Enjoy the excitement, creativity and fun of learning a pastime that offers boundless possibilities. You will learn all the steps necessary to prepare a warp, dress it onto a floor loom, then weave. We will also discuss the loom itself and how it works, how to design and plan a project, read a pattern draft, fiber selection and finishing techniques. During the week you will be able to weave one or two simple projects, such as a scarf, table runner, or placemats. Cost of your projects will vary, depending on your yarn choices. Expect to spend $25-50, plus $10 for instructional notebook. Looms and weaving accessories provided. Designed for people with no weaving experience, but may also be used as a refresher. 13 - Beyond Beginning: Weaving (June-20-25) - Class Fee $ 380 Nancy Adams Have you had some weaving experience, but still consider yourself a “beginning” weaver? This class will focus on which fibers, projects and techniques are good options for the novice weaver. Plan a baby blanket, scarf, towels, table linen or shawl from cotton, linen, silk, chenille or wool. Choose a weave structure, from plain weave to weaves not so plain! Time will be spent on reviewing the warping process and the pattern draft. Examples of suitable projects will be available for inspiration. Expect to spend $35-50, depending on your project and yarn choices. Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided. For beginning to intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multiharness floor loom. 15 - Weave, Cut & Sew (June 27- July 2) - Class Fee $ 380 Mary Sue Fenner Are you a beginning weaver who is ready to move on from scarves and shawls to actually making a garment? In this class you will weave fabric, cut it to a pattern and sew it into a simple top, vest or jacket. Or, you may bring fabric that you have already woven at home. Every step will be thoroughly discussed: from choosing appropriate yarns, to warping and weaving, washing your finished yardage, cutting it to construct a garment, and sewing it together, all in an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and pot lucks! Many sample garments will be available for close inspection and inspiration. Expect to spend $40-80 for yarns, depending on your choices. Looms and weaving accessories provided. Geared for a beginning to intermediate weaver with a basic knowledge of warping and weaving on a 4-harness floor loom. Isn’t it faster and more economical to purchase it pre-made? Towels are one of the most utilitarian objects a weaver can make, yet one that gives a great sense of accomplishment. When using a handwoven towel, even the simplest kitchen tasks seem more rewarding. During this class we’ll explore cotton as a fiber: its history, economic importance, how it’s ginned, spun and woven. You will experience the anticipation and satisfaction of planning the design for either 4- or 8-harnesses, choosing the yarn and colors, and the joy of throwing a shuttle, as you watch your weaving come to life. Yarns may be purchased in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own from home. Expect to spend $20-30 for yarns, depending on your choices, plus $10 notebook fee. 4- and 8-harness looms and weaving accessories provided. You must know how to warp and weave on a 4- or 8-harness 19 - Weave, Cut & Sew (July 11-16) - Class Fee $ 380 Mary Sue Fenner See Class No. 15 for description. 25 - Inkle Weaving Workshop (July 30-August 1) - Class Fee $ 210 Christi Eales Ehler Before buttons, zippers and Velcro, people fastened their clothing with “inkles”narrow woven bands. The inkle loom is a small pegged frame designed to weave such bands. It’s portable, quick to warp and weave on, and a great way to play with color, as well as use up odds and ends of yarn with little loom waste. In today’s world “inkles” have many uses too---from bookmarks, camera strap, or cell-phone pouch to one-of-a-kind accessories such as belts and jewelry, or as special accents for your handwoven garments and other fiber creations. You can weave a number of small projects on one warp, or combine several coordinating bands into larger pieces. Despite the limited weaving width, the possibilities are endless! Many samples of contemporary uses for inkle bands will be available for your inspiration. The open nature of this class allows you to design and create one or more projects of your choice, depending on your interests and experience. Beginners will focus on designing for plain weave, creating bands with complex-looking color patterns and/or emphasizing texture with warps of mixed yarns. Students ready to go beyond the basics may experiment with special on-loom weaving effects, pick-up patterns, adding beads to warp or weft, and more. Class will also cover a variety of finishing techniques. Schacht inkle looms and shuttles will be provided, or bring your own. Expect to spend $10-25 on yarn, depending on your choices, plus $8 notebook fee. For all levels. 33 - Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Floor Loom (August 15-20) - Class Fee $ 380 Nancy Frantz See Class No. 5 for description. 44 - Overshot Odyssey (Sept. 12-17) - Class Fee $ 380 Rita Hagenbruch Embark on an adventure, exploring the overshot weave structure. You will be encouraged to complete several projects, and individual help is emphasized. Bring materials to recycle for a truly traditional rug, or new material to complete a more tailored project. A supply list will be sent to you prior to class. $10 notebook fee. Looms and weaving accessories provided. A sewing machine is highly recommended for the class, but not required.
