We’ll focus on Swedish techniques that are beautiful for household and interior textiles. Halvdräll enables you to weave on four shafts textiles that resemble the look of damask or turned twill blocks, and Monk’s Belt is considered an art weave in Sweden. You will be able to choose from an assortment of yarn sizes and fibers, such as cotton, linen and wool, and weave a towel, table runner, wall hanging or pillow cover. Yarns may be purchased in the Sievers Shop, or bring your own from home, including handspun. Costs will vary, depending on your choice of fibers and project. Expect to spend $25-60, plus a $10 notebook fee. Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided. Here is your chance to enjoy the fun and creativity of weaving in a weekend’s time. You’ll learn to prepare a warp and dress it onto the loom; then weave. We will discuss the table loom and how it works, fiber selection and finishing techniques. There will be options for color and design, and completed samples for inspiration. Once you’ve learned the basics of weaving, they may be easily transferred to floor loom weaving. Expect to spend $15-25 for yarns, plus materials fee of $5 for handouts. Looms and weaving accessories provided. This class is designed for people with no weaving experience, but may also be used as a refresher. 20 - Weave, Cut & Sew - Class Fee $ 360 Mary Sue Fenner Are you a beginning weaver who is ready to move on from scarves and shawls to actually making a garment? In this class you will weave fabric, cut it to a pattern and sew it into a simple top, vest or jacket. Or, you may bring fabric that you have already woven at home. Every step will be thoroughly discussed: from choosing appropriate yarns, to warping and weaving, washing your finished yardage, cutting it to construct a garment, and sewing it together, all in an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and pot lucks! Many sample garments will be available for close inspection and inspiration. Expect to spend $40-80 for yarns, depending on your choices. Looms and weaving accessories provided. Geared for a beginning to intermediate weaver with a basic knowledge of warping and weaving on a 4-harness floor loom. Not only is the inkle loom easy and quick to warp and weave, it’s a great way to use up small amounts of yarn from your stash with almost no loom waste. Inkle bands have many uses, and the open nature of this class allows you to design and create one or more projects of your choice, whether it be a belt to match a dress or favorite pair of jeans, guitar or camera strap, bookmark, bracelet or earrings. Many examples will be available for your inspiration. Explore the possibilities! The class will also cover adding beads to warp and/or weft and finishing techniques. Schacht inkle looms and shuttles will be provided, or bring your own. Expect to spend $10-20 on yarn, depending on your choices, plus $8 notebook fee. You will begin to weave a rug in class, using authentic Navajo yarns and patterns, and learn basic Navajo tapestry techniques. In addition to learning these, you will be given a background on the history of Navajo weaving to help you develop an appreciation for the beauty of this ancient art. Although you will not be able to complete your rug in class, you will be given instructions for finishing it at home. The overall size of your rug will be 20” wide or narrower, by 20-40” long, depending on the design you choose. Fran will furnish all looms and tools for your use during the week, and they will also be available for purchase (approx. $140). Maybe it’s been so long since you took your last weaving class or warped up your loom that you’re not quite sure how it works anymore? This class will cover the fundamentals of weaving a little more quickly than in a beginning class, including a review of the warping process and the pattern draft. We’ll discuss designing and planning, including appropriate fibers and weave structure. During the week you should be able to weave one or two simple projects of your choice, such as a table runner, baby blanket, scarf, shawl or towels. Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided. For beginning weavers with some prior weaving experience. 46 - Computers In Weaving - Class Fee $ 200 Judith T. Yamamoto Did you know that the Jacquard loom, developed in the 18th century, was a forerunner of our modern computers? Now we’ve come full circle: with computers everywhere, weavers are using them as designing tools and even to drive their looms. This class will survey available weaving software, and you will have the opportunity to try demo versions of a selection of the major design programs. You may bring your own laptop, or there will be computers here for you to work on. And, Judie will bring her 24-shaft computer-drive loom for you to see and try out, if you wish. Basic weaving knowledge is necessary and some knowledge of drafting would be useful. For intermediate to advanced weavers. 53 - Weaving Workshop - Class Fee $ 360 Jean Hutchison & Louise French This class is designed to be an open studio class and to encourage participants to expand their weaving horizons. Each weaver will come to the class with a personal challenge in mind. This could be trying a new kind of yarn or finer yarn, a new weave structure, a supplemental warp using a second warp beam, or something as basic as improving your selvages, or preparing and weaving a longer warp. The week will be spent planning and weaving a project, as well as being inspired by what others in the class are weaving. Each person will go home with a notebook that will include the weaving instructions for all the projects woven in class. Expect to spend $35-$50 for yarn, plus $10 notebook fee. Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided. For intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multiharness floor loom and read a pattern draft. 55 - More Than Four: Introduction To Multi-Shaft Weaving - Class Fee $ 360 Judith T. Yamamoto When “harness envy” finally gets you, and you think about moving from your familiar 4-shaft loom to 8 (or more!), your weaving will enter a new level of complexity. This class focuses on the challenges faced by new “multiharness” weavers, from tie-ups to drafts to technical considerations (such as which treadles carry the heaviest load). We will discuss how familiar weaves such as overshot or twill differ on 8 shafts and explore some structures that can only be woven on “more than four.” In round-robin style, each student will choose a different 8-shaft weave and thread it onto a loom. Everyone will end up with a notebook full of swatches and a head full of ideas for future projects. Cost of yarns will vary, depending on your choices. Expect to spend $25-50, plus $10 notebook fee. 8-harness looms and weaving accessories provided. You must know how to warp and weave on a 4- or 8-harness floor loom. For intermediate to advanced weavers. 56 - Lace Weaves - Class Fee $ 360 Jean Hutchison Weavers are fascinated by lace weaves. How do those holes get there? This class will be used to explore lace weaves, including Huck, Huck lace, Bronson lace, Spot Bronson, Swedish lace and Canvas Weave. Time will be spent understanding the lace structures to be able to design original patterns. Possible projects in lace include table linens, scarves, clothing fabric, curtain fabric, wall hangings and towels. Expect to spend $35-$50 for yarn, plus $10 notebook fee. Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided. For intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multiharness floor loom and read a pattern draft. 60 - Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Floor Loom - Class Fee $ 360 Nancy Adams See Class No. 29 for description. 68 - Diamond Rag Rugs - Class Fee $ 360 Deb Sharpee Expand your rag rug repertoire by learning how to create Deb’s Diamond Rag Rug. Her technique results in a rug with zigzags and strong diagonal lines, through use of repeating weft colors. Over the course of the week we will explore basic rag rug concepts, as well as variations on the basic “diamond” idea, and how color movement works within the rugs. This will allow you to make two very individual Diamond Rag Rugs. Specialty fabrics may be used for color gradation and sharing, or solid colors will make a “classic” version. A supply list, including amounts of weft material to bring, will be sent to you prior to class. $10 notebook fee. Looms and weaving accessories provided. Sewing machine required. You need not have woven a rag rug before, but you must have prior weaving experience and be able to warp your own 4-harness floor loom. |
