Weaving

1      Navajo Rug Weaving      (May 20-25)
Class Fee $400

Betty Glynn Carlson     Learn the fundamentals of making rugs in the traditional Navajo style.  You will use authentic patterns and wool yarns, and learn the various tapestry techniques used in Navajo weaving.  Beginning students will be encouraged to make a small piece; intermediate students are welcome to bring a work in progress or to warp a new project.  Betty will furnish the looms and tools needed for your use during the week if you are a beginner, and they will also be available for purchase.  (Looms are $140.  Navajo weaving tools are sold separately and will cost $50-80, depending on your choice/s.)  Materials fee of $30 for beginner project yarns and equipment use.  Familiarity with basic weaving terms will be helpful, but no previous weaving experience is necessary.  For beginning and intermediate level students.

3      Halvdräll & Monk’s Belt      (June 3-8)
Class Fee $400

Rita Hagenbruch
This is a wonderful class for a beginning weaver who has learned to dress a loom and would like to begin exploring block structures.  We’ll focus on Swedish techniques that are beautiful for household and interior textiles.  Halvdräll enables you to weave textiles that resemble the look of damask or turned twill blocks on only four shafts, and Monk’s Belt is considered an art weave in Sweden.  You will be able to choose from an assortment of yarn sizes and fibers, such as cotton, linen and wool, and weave a towel, table runner, wall hanging or pillow cover.  Yarns may be purchased in the Sievers Shop or bring your own from home, including handspun.  Expect to spend $30-70 for yarns, depending on your choice of fiber and project, plus $10 notebook fee.  Your choice of 4- and 8-shaft looms and weaving accessories provided. This class is geared for beginning or intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multi-harness floor loom and are able to read a pattern draft.

6      Adult/Child Class:  Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Table Loom
(June 15-17)
Class Fee $220/120

Nancy Frantz     No previous weaving experience necessary!  Here is your chance to get a taste of weaving, to have some fun with a special child/adult, and to leave with a small collection of woven items to use as gifts or mementos of the weekend.  Working with your partner, you will learn how to dress and weave on a 4-harness table loom.  Each team will prepare a loom with an easy project (bookmarks, notecard inserts, bracelets, pins, coasters, hot pads).  Then, working ‘round robin’ style, you’ll have the opportunity to weave each project and complete any finishing details.  There will be options for color and design, and completed samples for inspiration.  Materials fee of $10 per person for sample yarns and handouts.    Looms and weaving accessories provided.  Child age range of 10-16.  For all levels.

8      Exploring Weave Structures On A Single Warp      (June 17-22)
Class Fee  $400

Robyn Spady
Would you like to develop a better understanding of weave structures without having to re-warp your loom?  Did you know the cloth we produce often has more to do with how we weave it, rather than how the loom has been warped?  Would you like to achieve more versatility of warp, so you can weave a multitude of different fabrics on a single warp?  Then, this class is for you!  In it you will dress your loom with your choice of one of three 4-shaft threadings and weave it many different ways…from twill, lace and overshot, to swivel, corduroy, deflected weft, and double-faced.  At the same time you will be presented with the basics of a variety of structures and how to adapt a single threading to achieve a number of different weaves, including concepts such as star vs. rose fashion, tied weave, weaving on opposites, and echo treadling.  Yarns may be purchased in the Sievers Shop or bring your own.  Expect to spend $30-70 for yarns, depending on your choice of fiber and project, plus $10 notebook fee.  Looms and weaving accessories provided. For intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multi-harness floor loom and are able to read a pattern draft.

10      Beyond Beginning:  Weaving      (June 24-29)
Class Fee $400

Nancy Adams
Have you had some weaving experience, but still consider yourself a “beginning” weaver?  This class will focus on which fibers, projects and techniques are good options for the novice weaver.  Plan a baby blanket, scarf, towels, table linen or shawl from cotton, linen, silk, chenille or wool.  Choose a weave structure, from plain weave to weaves not so plain!  Time will be spent on reviewing the warping process and the pattern draft.  Examples of suitable projects will be available for inspiration.  Expect to spend $35-50, depending on your project and yarn choices.  Your choice of 4- or 8-harness loom and weaving accessories provided.  For beginning to intermediate weavers who know how to warp and weave on a multi-harness floor loom.

16      Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Table Loom      (July 12-15 )
Class Fee $300

Nancy Frantz
No previous weaving experience necessary!  Here is your chance to enjoy the fun and creativity of weaving in a weekend’s time.  You’ll learn to prepare a warp and dress it onto the loom; then weave.  We will discuss the table loom and how it works, fiber selection and finishing techniques.  There will be options for color and design, and completed samples for inspiration.  Once you’ve learned the basics of weaving, they may be easily transferred to floor loom weaving.  Expect to spend $15-25 for yarns, plus $5 materials fee for handouts.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  This class is designed for people with no weaving experience, but may also be used as a refresher.

21      Weave, Cut & Sew      (July 22-27)
Class Fee  $400

Mary Sue Fenner     Are you a beginning weaver who is ready to move on from scarves and shawls to actually making a garment?  In this class you will weave fabric, cut it to a pattern and sew it into a simple top, vest or jacket.  Or, you may bring fabric that you have already woven at home.  Every step will be thoroughly discussed:  from choosing appropriate yarns, to warping and weaving, washing your finished yardage, cutting it to construct a garment, and sewing it together, all in an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and pot lucks!  Many sample garments will be available for close inspection and inspiration.  Expect to spend $40-80 for yarns, depending on your choices.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  Geared for a beginning to intermediate weaver with a basic knowledge of warping and weaving on a 4-harness floor loom.  Sewing machine and basic sewing skills are also required.

31      Inkle Weaving Workshop      (August 10-12)
Class Fee $220

Christi Eales Ehler      Learn weaving basics on a loom that is portable, quick to warp, easy to weave on, and provides a great way to experiment with color.  Woven inkle bands may range in width and have many uses.  You might choose to make wearables such as jewelry, belts or decorative clothing accents, camera straps, cellphone pouches, bookmarks, Christmas ornaments, etc.  Christi will bring plenty of examples for your inspiration.  Beginners will focus on warp set-up, plain weave design for complex-looking color patterns, mixed warp color effects, and finishing techniques, while making a variety of projects they select.  Intermediates may experiment with special on-loom weaving effects, pick-up patterns, adding beads to warp or weft, and more.  Schacht inkle looms and shuttles will be provided, or bring your own.  Expect to spend $10-25 on yarn, depending on your choices, plus $8 notebook fee.  For all levels.

33      Painting Warp, Weaving Scarves      (August 12-17)
Class Fee $400

Heather Winslow
Imagine enjoying the beauty, spontaneity and satisfaction of weaving fabric in which colors are not confined to warp and/or weft stripes.  To accomplish this you will begin by stretching out your protein (wool or silk) warp, enough for two scarves, and “painting” it with acid dyes in whatever colors appeal to you, using a picture or natural object to help you determine a colorway, if you like.  Choose another compatible color for your weft; then savor every changing nuance as you weave, with the warp and weft interacting in a spontaneous array of hues and values in your woven structure.  If you wish to weave later at home, you may choose to spend the week dyeing.  Yarns may be purchased in the Sievers Shop or bring your own from home.  Expect to spend $30-70 for yarns, depending on your choice of fibers, plus $25 materials fee for dyes, chemicals and notebook.  Your choice of 4- and 8-shaft looms and weaving accessories provided. No dyeing experience required, but you must know how to warp and weave on a multi-harness floor loom independently.

41      Beginning Weaving On A 4-Harness Floor Loom      (August 26-31)
Class Fee $400

Nancy Frantz
Are you intrigued by the beauty of handwoven cloth?  Enjoy the excitement, creativity and fun of learning a pastime that offers boundless possibilities.  You will learn all the steps necessary to prepare a warp, dress it onto a floor loom, then weave.  We will also discuss the loom itself and how it works, how to design and plan a project, read a pattern draft, fiber selection and finishing techniques.  During the week you will be able to weave one or two simple projects, such as a scarf, table runner, or placemats.  Cost of your projects will vary, depending on your yarn choices.  Expect to spend $25-50, plus $10 for instructional notebook.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  Designed for people with no weaving experience, but may also be used as a refresher.

44      Holiday Handwovens      (September 9-14)
Class Fee   $400

Connie Westbrook     Handwovens and holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, seem to have a natural connection.  Just as liturgical garments are the tapestries for a worship service, home textiles are the vestments for these special times of year.  As weavers, we have the ability to instill greater meaning by creating those ‘home vestments’ ourselves.  During this class you will have the opportunity to do just that, using weave structures such as overshot, Summer & Winter, Monk’s Belt, and simple plain weave to create holiday runners, towels and tree ornaments.  Expect to spend between $25-45 for yarns, depending on your project choices, plus $10 notebook fee.  4- and 8-harness looms and weaving accessories provided.  This class is geared for experienced beginners and beyond.  You must know how to warp and weave on a multi-harness floor loom and be able to read a pattern draft.

49      Boundweave Rugs      (September 30 - October 5)
Class Fee $400

Lynn Schuster
Explore color and pattern through Boundweave!  This exciting weft-faced structure encompasses both.  We will discuss choosing color, its placement and pattern.  You will learn how to draft for 3-harness Krokbragd and 4-harness Rosepath.  Using graph paper and colored pencils, you will design a rug before going to the loom.  Then, watch your creation come to life as you weave.  Yarns will cost approx. $95-150, depending on the size of your rug (small rugs advised) and the number of colors chosen, plus $10 notebook fee.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  This class will benefit intermediate to advanced weavers who would like to learn more about drafting and color, as well as gain some new technical experience.  You must know how to warp and weave on a 4-harness floor loom and be able to read a basic pattern draft.

Class Fee  $400

Deb Sharpee     Join our class and immerse yourself in rag rug weaving.  Learn about plain weave and variations, use of color, selection of weft material, and finishes.  Lectures, demonstrations, slides and examples will be used throughout the class.  You will be able to choose your own projects, which may include stripes, twisted weft, inlay, and gradation rugs.  More advanced students may choose to warp for a Log Cabin or Double Binding rug.  You will be encouraged to complete several projects, and individual help is emphasized.  Bring materials to recycle for a truly traditional rug, or new material to complete a more tailored project.  A supply list will be sent to you prior to class.  $10 notebook fee.  Looms and weaving accessories provided.  A sewing machine is highly recommended for the class, but not required.  You need not have woven a rag rug before, but you must have prior weaving experience and be able to warp your own 4-harness floor loom.
