About Sievers School/Housing
|
Come... Enjoy, Share & Relax
For those of you who have visited the Door County Peninsula of Wisconsin, we need not tell about the breathtaking beauty of the area. Washington Island, we think, is the best.
Located just off the northernmost tip of Wisconsin's "thumb," this six-mile-square island is a jewel in the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan -- remote, tranquil and "beyond the tension line."
The Island provides an excellent setting for the Sievers School of Fiber Arts. We began our school in 1979, making our home in the refurbished Jackson Harbor Schoolhouse, which dates back to 1895. In 1982 we added a turn-of-the-century landmark barn, renovated to house a studio and dorm facility. These were joined in recent years by two beautiful new studios, a weaving studio with maple floors and Norwegian pine wainscoting and ceiling, and a hexagonal building with large pine support pillars and a cedar decking floor. These buildings allow ample space and impart a warm feeling of friendship and inspiration for our students.
So come...enjoy, relax and learn. Be one of us, as you meet new friends. We will be waiting for you!

The Sievers Shop
 |
Located in Jackson Studio at our School on Jackson Harbor Road, The Sievers Shop offers a wide range of supplies, including most of the books and materials used in the Sievers classes. We stock weaving and knitting yarns, books, fabric and basic quilting and sewing supplies, knitting needles, basketmaking tools, dye-ready fabric, scarf blanks and other surface design supplies, and fleece for spinning and felt making.
We carry fiber-related magazines, knitting and sewing patterns, and over 200 book titles, including those that feature and are written by our teachers. A wide variety of Sievers-design souvenir items are also available for purchase.
The Shop also features the original arts and fine crafts made by over 120 of our own Sievers teachers and students, ranging from $300.00 quilts to $100.00 baskets and rugs, to scarves, jewelry and on down to Christmas ornaments and packs of notecards.
The Sievers Shop presents a unique opportunity for alumni and staff to market their original handcrafts. If you are interested in selling your work, please bring samples with you when you come for class. The consignment season runs from May 1 through October 31.
In our display area, Sievers looms are set up for demonstration and for sale. In addition to our looms, we are a dealer for Ashford and Louet spinning wheels. Many accessories for weaving and spinning are in stock, as well. (If you purchase a Sievers loom while you are here as a student, you receive a 10% discount on your loom and save the cost of shipping.)
Located next to the display area is the Sievers Library, a collection of books mainly relating to fiber arts, augmented by books about Washington Island and for general reading. Students and teachers are encouraged to check books out while here for your class/es. |
